The category winners in the 2014 Costa Book Award have been announced, with Ali Smith winning in the Novel category with How to be Both, a Man Booker Prize shortlisted novel about grief and the experience of making and appreciating art.
The Costa Book Award is now in its 43rd year it was previously named the Whitbread Prize. It is open solely to authors who live in the UK and Ireland. The winners are:

First Novel: Emma Healey, Elizabeth Is Missing
Biography: Helen Macdonald, H Is For Hawk
Poetry: Jonathan Edwards, My Family And Other Superheroes
Children's: Kate Saunders, Five Children On the Western Front
