Four of the nine best picture nominations for this year's Academy Awards, which will be presented February 26, are based on books:
- Lion, adapted from Saroo Brierley's memoir A Long Way Home
- Arrival, based on Ted Chiang's short story, "Story of Your Life"
- Fences, adapted from August Wilson's play which explores the evolving African-American experience and examines race relations, among other themes.
- Hidden Figures, based on the book of the same name by Margot Lee Shetterly, subtitled: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race
